Recording: The Last Days of the Dublin Cattle Market

StoriesTeatime Talks

Published 28 April 2023

In this talk Dr Mary Muldowney explores the history of the Dublin Cattle Market - a market once so central to the nation’s livestock trade. The Cattle Market played an important role in the development of the area near the North Circular Road and Prussia Street and shed light on what was once such an important workplace in what is now Dublin 7. The talk will feature extracts from interviews with people who worked in the Cattle Market during the 1960s, up to 1973, when it closed for the last time.

Dr. Mary Muldowney is the Dublin City Council Historian in Residence for the Dublin Central area. She has a particular interest in labour and women's history and is a member of the organising committee of the Irish Labour History Society. She was recently appointed as co-editor of the Society's journal, Saothar. She is also a member of the Expert Working Group for the Grangegorman Histories Project and is directing the oral history element of the programme.
