Family Workshop: A Stitch in Time
NewsPublished 23 January 2025
Join us for this family workshop at 14 Henrietta Street. Meet our artist in residence Orlagh Meegan-Gallagher and explore the history of the house through textiles. Touch and feel the fabrics of the past, see Orlagh's artwork, and try out some textile art techniques.
Orlagh says " I have spent months exploring the history of 14 Henrietta Street creating a 9-foot-long textile art piece based on what I learnt from talking to staff, tour guides and historians. Now I would love to show you the art piece and tell you a bit about all the stories that I’ve woven into the artwork.
The workshop will start with a short introduction to the history of the house with Dervilia, the museum's Education Officer. We will look at what people were wearing from the 1700’s when the first family lived here, right up until the 1970s when the last person left the house. Then you will get to touch and feel fabrics from the different eras…one piece is 300 years old! You’ll get to do some art work on fabric with me, using techniques that I used in the art piece, which you’ll be able to take away with you.
This workshop is for any young person interested in history, storytelling, fashion and textiles and how they can all be brought together to make art."
This event is suitable for families with children aged 8-13 and will be 90 minutes in duration.
When: 11:30 am - 1 pm, Friday 21 February.
Please note: this workshop does not include a guided tour of 14 Henrietta Street. Tours can be booked separately here.
