Beyond The Hall Door: Life in a Dublin Tenement
NewsStoriesPublished 13 April 2026

We recently contributed to a documentary about life in Dublin’s tenements which aired on Newstalk radio. Beyond The Hall Door: Life in a Dublin Tenement was made by reporter Emma Tyrell and recorded in part at 14 Henrietta Street. You can listen back to Beyond The Hall Door: Life in a Dublin Tenement on the Newstalk website here. Running time 46 minutes.
The documentary features interviews with two of our museum team, tour guide Pat Garry and social historian Donal Fallon, with first hand accounts from former residents of the house. Emma also spoke to former residents of other Dublin tenements such as those on Mary Street, Jervis Street and Charlotte Street. They share what daily life was like from the 1940s to the 1970s, including cooking, cleaning, school, and work, and the move to Dublin’s new suburbs.
If you’d like to read more about what life was like in 14 Henrietta Street during this time you can pick up a copy of 14 Henrietta Street: From Tenement to Suburbia, 1922 - 1979, by Donal Fallon, available from our gift shop in the museum or online.
