Sensory connection to the past

NewsStories

Published 16 October 2025

14 Henrietta Street’s new collection of soaps have been carefully crafted to capture the essence of the house’s rich heritage. Inspired by stories from its past — from the gifting of oranges at Christmas to the popularity of lavender soaps and cleaning products — each soap offers a sensory connection to those who once lived here.

“This research and creating journey began by looking into the historical context of soaps from the 1907 Irish International Exhibition, where Dublin soap making companies like Dixon’s Dublin Soaps and J. Barrington & Sons showcased their products. I discovered that soaps such as Irish Elk Buttermilk Soap, Oatmeal Soap, and Peach Blossom, as well as Glycerine and Cucumber soap, were used in Dublin. Linking with past residents' stories from 14 Henrietta Street also led me to a wealth of stories, scents, and experiences that helped shape the inspiration for the soaps that I created specially for this museum.” Suzanne, Clarkes of Dublin

The Lavender soap and the Sweet Orange soap each serve as a reminder of life in 14 Henrietta Street, a tangible link between past and present bringing the history of the house to life in a unique way.
